Increase in Outdoor Smoking Bans Throughout the United States

VIRGINIA:  The Virginia Indoor Clean Air Act requires state agencies and localities to consider reasonable no-smoking areas in any building they own or lease.  But in Fairfax County, they’ve taken it a step farther.  As of December 1, 2010, you will no longer be able to smoke in county-owned bus shelters while waiting for a bus.  Violators will be fined up to $25.

SOUTH CAROLINA:  In Myrtle Beach, outdoor ash trays are being replaced with “No Smoking” signs and, as of November 1, 2010, tobacco products are off-limits outside city buildings, including the Chapin Memorial Library and City Hall.

NEW JERSEY:  There will be no more smoking allowed in Clifton, New Jersey’s, parks and recreational facilities.  City Manager Al Greco announced that there will be a maximum fine of $1,250 if you’re caught lighting up.

CALIFORNIA:  While smoking was already banned in restaurants, bars, beaches, and bus stops, the Long Beach City Council has now passed a no-smoking ordinance which includes all city parks, sports fields, and even hiking sites.

This is just a small sampling of recent no-smoking bans that have just passed, in addition to ones that have been on the books for years and ones that are currently being debated and are on the verge of passing.  This is happening in every state of the Union.
